By making the transport workflow more efficient, it frees up human capacity that can be channeled into other activities. How does the screw conveyor work? What types are there? What is a screw conveyor and how does it work?

A screw conveyor is designed to make material handling more efficient. But how does it do that?

A conveyor screw performs the task of transport, which is attached to the tube shaft using a screw thread. The whole system is driven by an engine, and the material travels through a tube. It can be operated horizontally or on a slope and can be used not only for transport but also for mixing and pressing.

The coefficient of friction between the conveyor or trough and the material being conveyed must be greater than that between the conveyor and the material. This is what allows the necessary movement to take place.

The screw conveyor is used in a variety of sectors. Typical applications include agriculture (combine harvester augers, auger conveyors, etc.), but they are also used in the construction, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries.

Types of screw conveyor 

The design of a conveyor system depends on exactly what material needs to be moved and exactly what the task is. For example, if medium-sized material needs to be moved, a screw conveyor with a screwed surface may be a good choice, but if the material is large, you may need shovels to move it.

The shape of the discharge opening will also be influenced by the material. For this reason, accessories such as a thread puller head or a cutting knife can be mounted on the discharge opening.

From a manufacturing point of view, three main categories of screw conveyors can be distinguished, which are used for different purposes and in different situations:

  • Segmented screw conveyor, characterised by high material thickness and high load capacity.
  • Pulled screw conveyors that are used mainly in the agricultural sector.
  • Wound screw conveyor, which have a small diameter.

What are the elements?

The design of a screw conveyor system is complex. It has two end plates: the drive side and the free-running side. Both are connected to a bearing and a seal, but the former can also be complemented by an indirect or direct drive.

In addition, the system also includes the suspension bearing, the rotor, the trough element, and the hopper, and can also accommodate various sensors.

The main requirements for the screw conveyor are

To ensure proper performance, each conveyor must meet the following three basic requirements:

  • Quality: quality is of paramount importance, both in terms of the use of materials and the manufacturing process.
  • High load capacity: the conveyor must be able to withstand the specified load, even when handling large quantities of material.
  • Accuracy: accuracy ensures that the conveyor can perform its task in a system.
  • ATEX certification: ATEX is an abbreviation for an EU directive that applies to equipment and protection zones used in potentially explosive atmospheres. It divides the work area into zones according to the degree of explosion risk and allows for the placement of different types of equipment. Conveyor belt equipment must comply with these requirements.

Maintenance of the system

Quality production is the basis for a long-term system, but the importance of maintenance should not be overlooked. Bearing lubrication, for example, can contribute to smooth operation. By applying lubrication procedures, friction between surfaces can be reduced, thus preventing wear. Parts do not touch each other, so they do not get hot, and the noise of the operation is reduced.

The importance of bearing lubrication cannot be disputed. However, instead of traditional manual lubrication, automatic bearing lubrication may be a worthwhile option. This is a much more accurate, cost-effective, uniform, and environmentally friendly solution.
